Not so car free

I was all set to scooter Max to camp next week while our car is dead until I remembered it is bicycle camp.

The good news - really the BEST news - is that there is safe storage at camp for his bicycle, so I only need to figure out Monday morning and Friday afternoon, and I think I have.

Amazing and 80

I can't be there in person to hug my dad for his 80th birthday, so I figure the next best thing to do would be to spell it out for him.

National Press Club

Went to Taco Night at the National Press Club today. It would have been even without the free tacos. My guide had a 4 digit membership number, oo la la.

We were looking at pictures of the famous people who have spoken there and at the famous pictures taken by members and my friend's daughter asked why someone shot Reagan and I said "to impress an actress named Jodie Foster." I told her it didn't work.

Fun evening in a historic setting.

Dues are about $800/year, so if you join, be sure to eat a lot of tacos.

Valentines

My sister is so great about mailing cards early so they get the special stamp from Loveland, Colorado.

Max gets so little mail he didn't realize how special it was until I pointed it out.

Riding the Rails

Last weekend we enjoyed the sunshine and headed to the East Bay to ride the Redwood Valley Railway. Max had been on this small steam train before, so I didn't take pictures but just enjoyed the ride. The 12 minute ride takes you through the woods and opens up to beautiful views of San Francisco Bay.

To my surprise and delight, the half size versions of the already small trains were open for folks to look around... and to ride! I was hoping we could see them. I never thought we'd get to ride on one.

The smaller trains are run by hobbyists. The little steam version wasn't working but they got out a diesel for us. They said that too much wobbling from passengers could make it derail.

The sets we went by were quite detailed, and included a Masonic Lodge.

Why build a fun train yard if you're not going to have a tunnel?

On an even smaller track, we saw this guy zoom by sitting sideways.

It sure looked like a lot of fun and I can see why people who want to work on trains might want something bigger than what would fit in a basement or attic.

It's hard to tell that this train is so much bigger than the ones above.

Not hump day

I thought all the construction noises outside were for our new traffic calming measures but another neighbor outside to look told me those were two weeks away. A sign that says speed hump and spray paint on the street showing the placement are already in place.

This work is the city coming in to repair sidewalks after home owners were given time to do the work themselves. A few houses did.

Glad I'm not trying to sleep right now.
